How we count
Every number on auracheck.dev comes from the registries’ public APIs, is refreshed daily, and only counts what can be shown to be yours. This page explains exactly how.
Where the numbers come from
- npm: downloads from api.npmjs.org, month by month since January 2015.
- PyPI: downloads from pypistats.org without mirrors. PyPI keeps about 6 months, so your history grows from the day you join.
- VS Code: installs on the Visual Studio Marketplace plus downloads on Open VSX, joined by extension id.
- itch.io: lifetime downloads of your published games, read with your own API key.
- GitHub: stars of your own public repositories (forks excluded) and your followers.
What counts as yours
A package counts when we can show it’s yours: its repository is one of your GitHub repositories, or it belongs to a registry account you linked and verified (by email, by a code sent to that email, or with your itch.io API key).
Packages that only share your username are listed as “Unverified” with their numbers, but add nothing to your totals, your aura or the leaderboard. Linking someone else’s account would otherwise be enough to reach the top.
A package can count on two profiles: the owner of its repository and whoever verified the registry account that publishes it. Both took part in it.
Downloads
Totals add all-time downloads and installs across registries. When a registry doesn’t give an all-time figure, we use the full history we have (or, until we have it, the last 12 months or 30 days), so new profiles can start lower and grow as the history fills in.
“Last 30 days” comes from the registry when it reports it, and otherwise from our own daily snapshots (VS Code, itch.io, GitHub stars), so it appears once a profile is a month old.
Downloads are a rough signal: they include CI pipelines, mirrors and bots, and each registry counts differently. Compare them with care.
The Aura score
aura = 250 · max(0, log10(1 + downloads) − 2) + 250 · max(0, log10(1 + stars) − 1) + 100 · max(0, log10(1 + followers) − 1)
In words: every 10× more downloads past the first 100 adds 250; every 10× more stars past the first 10 adds 250; every 10× more followers past the first 10 adds 100. Logarithms keep a package with billions of downloads from drowning everything else, and small numbers don’t count at all. A small maintainer lands in the hundreds; the very top is around 4,000.
Your rank and percentile compare you with everyone on the leaderboard; “this month” is the change since your snapshot of 30 days ago.
Freshness
Every profile is refreshed once a day. Owners can also refresh their own profile once an hour.
Sources and attribution
Package discovery for PyPI and VS Code uses ecosyste.ms (CC BY-SA 4.0). Download counts come from npm, pypistats.org, the Visual Studio Marketplace, Open VSX and itch.io. auracheck.dev isn’t affiliated with any of them.
